Tottenham Hotspur suffered their third consecutive defeat in the English Premier League after losing 2-1 at home to Aston Villa in an exciting match filled with chances on Sunday. This marked Villa's first away win in just over two months, allowing them to surpass Tottenham and move up to fourth place in the standings, although that seemed unlikely early on.
The hosts took a deserved lead with a shot from Giovani Lo Celso that deflected in the 22nd minute, and Tottenham could have easily extended their lead before Pau Torres equalized with a powerful header in injury time of the first half.
Opportunities continued for both teams after the break, but Villa took the lead with a stunning goal from Ollie Watkins after an excellent pass from Youri Tielemans an hour into the match. Emiliano Martínez, the Aston Villa goalkeeper, made outstanding saves on two chances, and Ben Davies headed a golden opportunity over the bar while Pedro Porro hit the post for the hosts, who were unlucky and also faced a setback with another injury as Rodrigo Bentancur left the field injured in the first half.
Under manager Unai Emery, the team has 28 points from 13 matches, trailing Liverpool in third place on goal difference, while Tottenham sits fifth with 26 points.
