Villarreal announced in a statement that their winger Alex Baena filed a police complaint following allegations of being assaulted after the 3-2 victory over Real Madrid in La Liga.
Villarreal stated on Sunday that the incident occurred while Baena (21 years old) was on his way to the team bus after the match, and the club did not specify the identity of the assailant.
In the statement, Villarreal said, "We reject any form of violence, believe the player's account of the incident, and support him in the proceedings."
Spanish media reported that Real Madrid midfielder Ernesto Valverde assaulted Baena in the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium parking lot in response to the Villarreal player allegedly insulting his family.
Baena, a Spain U21 international who has scored ten goals in 38 matches across all competitions this season, expressed on Instagram, "I am very happy with the brilliant victory at a venue like Santiago Bernabéu. But I am very sad at the same time because of the assault I suffered after the match."
