Firefighting teams from Greece, Israel, Lebanon, Jordan, and the UK are battling a forest fire north of Limassol, Cyprus, on Monday. The firefighting crews have largely managed to contain the blaze, but occasional winds are causing flare-ups in scattered areas of the region. Justice Minister Anna Koukkidis Procopiou stated, "We have managed to contain the fire today. There are some fronts that are concerning, so we will send aerial assets (airplanes) tomorrow as a precaution. We hope the situation will be better tomorrow."
Israel, Greece, and Lebanon have sent aircraft and firefighting crews to support the Jordanian planes that were already on the island to combat another fire that broke out last week, along with many local volunteers. The Royal Air Force in southwestern Limassol is refueling several aircraft and providing fire trucks and personnel. The fire broke out yesterday afternoon before quickly spreading across the hilly area, leading to the precautionary evacuation of three residential communities last night.
