Google Introduces Unknown Number Identification Feature in Phone App

Google is working on adding a new feature to its phone app that allows users to identify unknown callers. The feature is called "Lookup" and has recently been spotted by some users of the app.

The feature operates in a simple manner: when tapping on an unknown number not saved in the contacts list within the call log, an option labeled "Lookup" appears. Upon pressing it, a search is conducted online using the unknown number via the Google app and its search engine. Users may discover the identity of the unknown caller if their information is posted online, simplifying the manual process users typically engage in by copying the number and pasting it into Google's search bar.

This method seems quite straightforward and less effective compared to the mechanisms used by specialized caller ID applications, such as the popular Truecaller app, which relies on a vast database of people's names and phone numbers with considerable accuracy. The new feature in Google’s phone app does not appear to compete with traditional caller ID applications.

Notably, this feature first appeared for users of the app in Japan and is expected to be rolled out globally in a few weeks in a gradual manner. The Google Phone app serves as the default calling application for managing calls on Pixel phones and most devices running the Android operating system.
