Meta Unveils the Mixed Reality Headset (Quest 3)

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg unveiled the next generation of the mixed reality headset (Quest 3) on Thursday, as the company prepares for the possibility of Apple changing the rules in a nascent market that has so far been dominated by the social media giant. He stated, "The headset, starting at $499, will be 40% thinner than Meta's previous headset and features colored mixed reality display technology that combines elements of augmented and virtual reality."

Zuckerberg mentioned that the Quest 3 will also include a new set of Qualcomm chips and will offer double the graphics processing power of its predecessor, Quest 2. The headset is set to launch in the fall.

He promised more details during the company's annual conference on virtual and augmented reality on September 27.

The Quest 2 and Quest Pro headsets from Meta represent 80% of the 8.8 million mixed reality headsets sold in 2022, according to estimates from market research firm IDC. Current Quest 2 headset prices will be reduced with performance updates aimed at providing a smoother experience for users.
