The Emirates Astronomy Society indicated that "winter begins astronomically in the country on Friday, December 22, at 07:28 AM UAE time, and continues until March 20, when spring begins astronomically." It clarified that "the seasons and periodicities are based on several concepts, as winter begins astronomically when the Sun is at its lowest point relative to the Earth in the southern Capricorn line, which occurs on December 21 and 22 each year during the winter solstice according to the Northern Hemisphere. Meanwhile, winter begins according to the climatic concept at the start of December, when temperature readings in the Northern Hemisphere reach their coldest."
Ibrahim Al-Jroan, a member of the Arab Union for Astronomy and Space Sciences and Chairman of the Emirates Astronomy Society, stated that "the length of night at the beginning of the season peaks in the Northern Hemisphere, making the length of daytime the shortest of the year, then the length of daytime gradually increases until it equals the night at its peak at the beginning of spring."
