Senegalese Navy Intercepts Two Boats Carrying 272 Migrants

The Senegalese navy announced that it intercepted two wooden boats carrying 272 individuals believed to be migrants, about 100 kilometers off the coast of the capital, Dakar, yesterday, Friday. They added in a post on the internet today, Saturday, that seven children and 16 women were among the passengers who were transferred to a naval base in Dakar. Thousands of migrants embark on perilous journeys across hundreds of miles of ocean separating Africa from Europe each year in search of a better life, with summer being the busiest time for such voyages. At least 559 people died attempting to reach the Canary Islands in 2022, while 126 were reported dead or missing on the same route in the first six months of this year, with 15 drowning incidents recorded, according to the International Organization for Migration.
