A United Airlines flight was forced to cut its journey short after flying nearly halfway, making an emergency return to the departure airport due to an unexpected crisis encountered in the air. According to details published by the British newspaper "Metro," the pilot had to return to Frankfurt Airport in Germany, from where it took off, after "the toilet overflowed, and sewage water flowed into the cabin."
The long-haul flight was en route from Germany to San Francisco, California, and the pilot had to turn around after hours into the flight. Passengers told the German newspaper "Bild" that the contents of the toilet waste tank were pushed back into the toilet, overflowing into the aircraft cabin, which caused a foul smell to quickly fill the rest of the cabin.
Reportedly, the crew contacted technical staff on the plane, but they were unable to find a solution that would allow them to continue the flight. The exact cause of the malfunction was not immediately clear, with United Airlines describing it as a "maintenance issue." The airline stated that all passengers were accommodated in hotels overnight and were flown to San Francisco on another flight the following day.
