Thief Returns Stolen Amount After 30 Years with Apology Letter

In an incident described as bizarre, a thief in the city of Sulaymaniyah in the Kurdistan Region returned a sum of money he stole nearly 30 years ago, along with an apology letter, without revealing his identity.

Residents of a house in Sulaymaniyah were surprised on Saturday evening when a masked man knocked on their door, leaving behind a bag that a woman who opened the door found.

Hirsh Karim reported that he and his family discovered a sealed envelope containing 400,000 Iraqi dinars (about $300) along with an apology letter written in Kurdish, detailing what had happened, according to local media. He mentioned that the remorseful thief asked in his heartfelt letter for forgiveness for stealing 400 Swiss francs between 1990 and 1998, noting that his father had indeed experienced a theft from their previous home in the "Rizgari" neighborhood south of Sulaymaniyah.

In his letter, the repentant thief wrote: "I searched for you after you changed your home. I stole 400 Swiss francs from your house in the (Smoud) area, so I am returning this 400,000 dinars to you. I hope you will clear my debt. I didn’t have any dinar in my pocket at that time, and I was in desperate need of it."
