The General Assembly of the International Football Federation (FIFA Congress) approved an amendment to the federation's regulations today, Friday, allowing two different countries to host World Cup tournaments at the same time. This decision is pending approval from the FIFA Council, and it could lead to determining the hosts for both the 2030 and 2034 tournaments simultaneously. Saudi Arabia is set to host the 2034 edition.
Gianni Infantino, the President of FIFA, announced that a virtual General Assembly will be held on December 11 to make a "potential" decision regarding the hosts of the two tournaments. This process is considered a formality, especially since there is only one bid to host each edition.
A joint proposal has been submitted by Morocco, Portugal, and Spain to host the 2030 edition, while Uruguay, Argentina, and Paraguay are prepared to host celebratory matches to mark the centenary of the World Cup. Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia has become the sole candidate to host the 2034 World Cup after Australia decided to withdraw from the race.
