Officials announced today, Tuesday, that at least eight people have died and more than 115,000 have been displaced due to floods in Assam, India. This situation arose after heavy monsoon rains caused the Brahmaputra River to overflow its banks earlier this month. They added that the flooding from the Brahmaputra River has submerged approximately 450 villages and 17 districts in the northeastern state, as well as sweeping across vast areas of wildlife sanctuaries. Floods are a recurring issue in Assam almost every year following heavy monsoon rains. Assam's Water Resources Minister, Piyush Hazarika, stated, "Eight people have died in various drowning incidents since the first wave of flooding began two weeks ago," and added that water levels have started to recede.
