Who Is Asaf Hamami, the Highest-Ranking Officer Captured by Hamas?

The Al-Qassam Brigades announced today, Thursday, that Asaf Hamami, the southern brigade commander in the Gaza Division, was captured on October 7. They noted that "Hamami was injured during his capture." The Al-Qassam Brigades released a video showing the southern brigade commander, posing the question in both English and Hebrew: "What is his fate now?" They added: "A leadership that leaves its army leaders in captivity!"

It is worth noting that the Israeli army declared on December 2 that Asaf Hamami was killed on October 7, stating that the body of the slain officer was with Hamas.

Who is Asaf Hamami? He was an officer in the Israeli army with the rank of colonel, serving as the commander of the southern brigade in the Gaza Division. Previously, he held the positions of commander of the Negev Brigade, commander of the Oz Training School, and commander of the Tsabar Battalion. Hamami is considered to be, alongside Roy Levi and Yonatan Steinberg, the highest-ranking of the Israeli army officers killed in the 2023 Israeli-Palestinian war.
