United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is arriving today, Saturday, at the Egyptian border with Gaza, a day after Israel announced its intention to continue the assault on the nearby city of Rafah, even without U.S. support. Guterres plans to meet with relief workers on the Egyptian side of Rafah, directly across the border from the city of Gaza, where 1.5 million Palestinians have sought refuge. Guterres had previously expressed shock at the continuation of the war in Gaza during Ramadan, calling for "the silencing of weapons and the release of hostages held by Hamas in observance of the fasting month for Muslims." The war in Gaza has entered its 169th day, marked by ongoing Israeli bombings across various cities in the region, amid an unprecedented humanitarian crisis and famine due to Israeli forces not allowing humanitarian aid to enter the territory.
