Title: Bishop Al-Rahi: We Support Every Step Towards Electing a President, Away from the Notion of Winner and Loser

Maronite Patriarch Bechara Boutros Al-Rahi stated today, Sunday, in his sermon during the divine liturgy in Bkerke, that "our politicians are called to practice piety that places them in the presence of God, enabling them to perform their political work as an art for the service of the common good, which encompasses the welfare of all citizens and the benefit of each individual. The invocation of God, before their actions, words, and positions, liberates them from their selfishness and personal interests, reconciles them to their disagreements, and adorns them with morality." He considered that "the awareness of God places them before the sense of responsibility for the destruction of the state's connections, the disruption of constitutional institutions, the faltering of public administrations, the impoverishment and humiliation of the people, their loss of faith in their homeland, and their displacement."

He added, "If the political leaders had invoked God, according to their ranks, they would have elected a president of the republic within the two months preceding the end of President Michel Aoun's term according to Article 73 of the Constitution. If they invoke God today after eight months of a vacant presidency seat, and in the face of a complete political, economic, financial, and social collapse, they would hasten to reach an agreement on electing a president that Lebanon needs under the current circumstances." He continued, "We bless every step in this direction, away from the odious notion of 'winner and loser' among individuals or among the components of the country. This leads to a serious rift in the life of the nation, while what is needed is the unity of Lebanon and its people and their welfare."
