Hodgson Leaves Struggling Crystal Palace, Glasner Appointed as Successor

Crystal Palace, competing in the English Premier League, announced in a statement that head coach Roy Hodgson has left his position today, Monday, after less than a year into his second term with the team, and Oliver Glasner has been appointed as his replacement. Glasner, the former coach of Eintracht Frankfurt, has signed a contract to manage the team until the end of the 2025-2026 season.

Hodgson stated in a release on the club's website: "This club is very special and means a lot to me, it has been a big part of my football life. I have enjoyed my time here over six seasons, which has given me the opportunity to work with top-class players and staff doing what I love every day."

He added, "However, I understand that in light of recent circumstances, it may be wise at this time for the club to plan for what’s next, and therefore I have made the decision to leave the team so that the club can move forward with its plans to bring in a new coach as desired this summer."

Hodgson faced criticism from fans during Palace's 5-0 loss to Arsenal last month, where fans expressed their anger by holding a banner reading: "Poor potential, weak decisions on and off the pitch take us backward."

Fan frustration increased when Hodgson substituted Michael Olise during a loss against Brighton after the team fell 3-0, before suffering another injury to a hamstring.

Hodgson's first tenure as Crystal Palace's coach lasted from 2017 to 2021, ending with the team finishing 14th in the league. The former Liverpool and England coach led the club to avoid relegation last season, but results have not met expectations, placing the south London club 16th in the standings.

The decision by Hodgson, 76 years old, came after two consecutive losses to Brighton & Hove Albion and Chelsea. His 3-1 loss to Chelsea was his 200th match in charge of the team.
