Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed hope on Wednesday for a peace summit to be held this fall, stating that discussions in Saudi Arabia this week would be a step toward achieving this goal. Zelensky mentioned in a message to Ukrainian diplomats that "about 40 countries will participate in the meeting in Saudi Arabia on August 5 and 6," indicating that "we are working on holding the summit next fall." He added, "Fall is very close, but there is still time to prepare for the summit and engage most countries in the world."
Zelensky and his team are working with allies to rally broad support for a "peace summit" that would establish principles to support a resolution to end the war that began with a full-scale Russian invasion nearly 18 months ago. The summit is expected to be based on a ten-point plan proposed by Kyiv last fall, which Zelensky is promoting. His vision for peace revolves around several key points, including the complete restoration of Ukraine's territorial integrity, the full withdrawal of Russian troops, ensuring food and energy security, nuclear safety, and the release of all prisoners.
