European Union Extends Sanctions on Syria

The European Council has extended the European Union's restrictive measures against the Syrian government until early June 2025, citing "the seriousness of the deteriorating situation in Syria." The current restrictive measures target a total of 316 individuals and 86 entities. Those listed are subject to asset freezes, and EU citizens and companies are prohibited from providing funds to them.

The Council also decided in a statement published on its official website to extend the humanitarian exemption introduced in February 2023 due to the severity of the humanitarian crisis in Syria, which has worsened due to the earthquake that struck Turkey and Syria. The statement noted that this decision "will ensure the continued provision of humanitarian aid and other activities that support basic humanitarian needs in a timely manner."

The Council expressed deep concern about the situation in Syria, stating: "After more than 13 years, the conflict remains a source of suffering and instability for the Syrian people and the region." The statement indicated that the Council believes "the Syrian government continues to pursue a policy of repression and human rights violations... Therefore, it is appropriate and necessary to maintain the current restrictive measures."
