Damage to Infrastructure in Gaza Estimated at $18.5 Billion

On Wednesday, Minister of National Economy Mohammad Al-Amour discussed opportunities for joint cooperation in developing the economy amid current challenges, with the World Bank's Regional Director for Palestine, Stefan Emblad, as the escalation in Gaza continues. The two sides referred to a report titled "Preliminary Damage Assessment," which estimated the damages incurred to buildings and essential infrastructure in the Gaza Strip at approximately $18.5 billion, equivalent to 97 percent of Palestine’s total GDP in 2022.

During the meeting held at the ministry's headquarters in Ramallah, Minister Al-Amour called on the international community to pressure Israel to halt the ongoing escalation since October 2023, and to open all crossings to allow aid into the Gaza Strip. The minister updated the World Bank on the government’s agenda, particularly regarding humanitarian and relief assistance for the residents of Gaza, recovery and reconstruction efforts, the financial situation, its impact on economic stability, and institutional reform, expressing appreciation for the support provided by the World Bank.

They reviewed the support programs implemented by the World Bank in various sectors during the meeting, emphasizing the importance of these programs and the need to enable the government to execute its initiatives, especially in light of significant challenges, including the ongoing Israeli seizure of clearance funds. They concluded the meeting by reaffirming their continued cooperation and joint coordination in executing programs and projects that contribute to economic development.
