The Central Investigation Bureau announced that Kusongnern was charged with violating environmental and natural resource laws by "possessing a protected wild animal without a permit." Under Thai law, the detained woman could face a fine of up to 100,000 baht (approximately £2,200) as well as a prison sentence of one year. In her confession to the police, Suangjit admitted that she bought the lion from another woman for 250,000 baht, but she failed to obtain an official transfer document due to insufficient information regarding the gender of the lion. Meanwhile, the National Parks and Wildlife Department of Thailand announced that the cub has been deported to Sri Lanka.
