Ecuador's President Daniel Noboa has declared a state of emergency for two months due to the current energy crisis affecting the country, which has led to a rationing of consumption. In a presidential decree, he stated that "the state of emergency is being declared due to serious internal disturbances and the deteriorating social situation throughout the country, resulting from the exceptional state of the electricity sector, to ensure the continuity of electricity services for the population." According to the decree, the state of emergency will last for 60 days to provide sufficient time to resolve the energy shortage issue and guarantee electricity supply currently to ensure stability in the near future. Noboa emphasized the mobilization of police and armed forces in the country to secure and protect vital energy infrastructure from "sabotage, terrorist attacks, and other threats." Ecuador is facing a severe energy crisis due to a complete shutdown of hydroelectric plants nationwide amid a record drought, as well as the suspension of electricity supplies from neighboring Colombia due to issues in electricity generation.
