North Korean leader Kim Jong Un stated that "his country possesses sufficient military power to deter the United States from military intervention in the event of a crisis on the Korean Peninsula. In the first phase of the conflict, North Korea will destroy the main offensive forces and the infrastructure and command systems of South Korea." During his visit to the North Korean National Defense Academy, which is celebrating its sixtieth anniversary, he emphasized that "our armed forces possess genuine military strength capable of deterring the United States from military intervention in the event of a crisis on the Korean Peninsula, and possess overwhelming power capable of destroying the main offensive forces, infrastructure, and command systems of the South Korean puppet army in the first phase of the operation." He also spoke about "the dangerous situation concerning national security and the course of radical modernization of the defense industry, as well as the reckless military and political provocations of the United States and its allies."
