The Permanent Representative of Malta, Vanessa Frazier, who heads the UN Security Council, announced that she will consider Iran's request for an urgent meeting of the council following the Israeli attack on its consulate in the Syrian capital, Damascus. In response to a question from a journalist, she said, "Of course. I still need to get to know the text of the message, as there were many meetings today."
The Iranian mission to the United Nations demanded on Tuesday morning that the UN Security Council convene an urgent session to discuss the "Zionist aggression against the Iranian consulate in Damascus," which resulted in the deaths of seven senior military advisors.
In its message, the mission stated that "the Israeli occupation regime carried out a heinous and atrocious terrorist attack on the diplomatic facilities of the Islamic Republic of Iran in the Syrian Arab Republic."
It added, "In light of this aggression, we call on the Security Council to take any necessary actions, including convening an urgent meeting to address this serious violation and to prevent future aggressive acts that threaten the security and safety of diplomatic missions."
The Iranian mission urged the international community to ensure that those involved in this attack are brought to justice, emphasizing that "the aggressive Israeli regime bears full responsibility for the consequences of such terrorist crimes, and Iran reserves its legitimate and inherent right, based on international law and the UN Charter, to respond decisively to such terrorist actions."
