Hand Grenade Thrown at Anti-Drug Forces: Here's What Happened!

The General Directorate of Internal Security Forces - Public Relations Division, issued the following statement on Saturday: "Around 7:45 PM on 29-12-2023, while a patrol from the Central Anti-Drug Office, supported by a force from the Special Unit of the Judicial Police, was on a mission to arrest a dangerous wanted individual for drug trafficking in Jounieh, named R.Z. (born in 1996, Lebanese), who was in a BMW (X5) vehicle accompanied by an unidentified driver. When the wanted individual got out of the vehicle, the forces attempted to apprehend him, but he pulled out a hand grenade and removed the safety pin, then tried to get back into the vehicle but was unable to as the driver fled, firing shots. In the meantime, one of the officers tackled the wanted individual and grappled with him, attempting to prevent him from throwing the grenade. They fell onto the other side of the Jounieh highway, at which point the wanted individual threw the grenade towards the forces. However, the immediate reaction of the officer saved the personnel, as he kicked the grenade away to ensure the safety of the forces, leading to the successful arrest of the wanted individual.

Two officers were injured by shrapnel from the grenade in various parts of their bodies. One of the sergeants was also injured by a shrapnel in his right thigh, which necessitated his hospitalization for treatment. An investigation is underway under the supervision of the competent judiciary, and efforts continue to apprehend the driver of the vehicle."

A dangerous wanted individual threw a hand grenade at elements from the Anti-Drug Office and the Special Unit during his arrest in Jounieh, while the bravery of one officer saved the team.
