Viagra is the lifesaving drug for treating erectile dysfunction, but experts have found that some inexpensive foods and drinks can mimic the effects of the blue pill. During a live talk show, Dr. Michael Mosley emphasized the benefits of beets, which are similar to Viagra. He stated that these vegetables help with vasodilation, improving blood flow to the genital organs and lowering blood pressure, similar to how Viagra works. Dr. Mosley added, "For those interested in biochemistry, beets are rich in nitrates. Nitrates are converted by the bacteria in your mouth into nitric oxide, which causes blood vessels to dilate, lowering blood pressure. It also provides a boost, especially for older adults, enabling them to become more active."
However, beets are not the only food with similar powers to the sexual drug. Research has revealed a range of other foods and drinks that have scientifically proven effects resembling Viagra:
1. **Strawberries**
Men may be able to avoid erectile dysfunction by consuming plenty of strawberries and blueberries. These foods are rich in certain flavonoids, which a study indicated may help prevent this condition. A study following more than 25,000 men and their diets over two decades found that those who consumed at least three servings of strawberries per week were 14% less likely to experience erectile issues. Dr. Thomas Gaffey from the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center told Today.com that such studies provide men with a chance to make lifestyle changes that do not involve taking medication.
2. **Coffee**
An American study found that men who consume coffee reported not facing erectile dysfunction problems. Researchers from the University of Texas found that men over 20 who drank the equivalent of two to three cups of coffee daily were less likely to report erectile dysfunction compared to those who do not drink coffee. The association was stronger in overweight men.
3. **Dark Chocolate**
It may be surprising that chocolate is associated with increased libido, but according to leading nutritionist Christine Stafridis, "this is likely due to the high caffeine content in dark chocolate." To clarify, consuming high levels of caffeine works to dilate blood vessels and increases blood flow to the genital organs, making orgasm easier and increasing the chances of erection. A 2005 study found a relationship between caffeine and increased sexual activity in rodents. However, we cannot be completely sure that caffeine has the same effect on human sexual organs. Kirsten added, "Dark chocolate contains high levels of the amino acid L-arginine, which has been shown to enhance blood flow and possibly increase satisfaction and desire."
