The social media platform "X" lifted the ban on searching for the name of pop singer Taylor Swift on Monday evening, after having imposed it due to the spread of fake indecent photos of her on the platform last week. Joe Benarok, the Chief Operating Officer of "X," stated in a press release that the search function has been reactivated and the social media platform will remain vigilant against any attempts to share such content and will remove it if found.
While users were searching for Taylor Swift's name on "X," formerly Twitter, on Sunday afternoon, they received a message saying, "Something went wrong. Please try reloading." Benarok described this action as temporary and implemented "very cautiously." A report from The New York Times indicated that one image of Swift, who was named Time magazine's "Person of the Year" in 2023, garnered 47 million views before the account was suspended.
The search ban followed intervention from the White House on Friday, which described the fake images as "concerning" and emphasized that social media companies bear responsibility for preventing the spread of such misleading content. Since billionaire Elon Musk acquired Twitter in 2022, he has faced criticism for his controversial posts, prompting many advertisers on the platform to withdraw for fear of being associated with harmful content.
