Internet Outage Concerns Egyptians: "A Solar Storm Hit Us"

Internet Outage Concerns Egyptians:

Social media platforms were filled with thousands of humorous comments and jokes after rumors of an internet outage circulated, which official sources categorically denied. The comments targeted internet companies, while others mocked the effects of the service disruption on daily life. One user wrote, "Transportation is cut off for at least an hour daily just to get anywhere." Another commented, "Water is cut off for four hours daily if you want to drink on schedule." One user stated, "The sun is to blame for the internet cut... the companies are unfortunate."

On the other hand, the head of the National Institute for Astronomical and Geophysical Research, Gad El-Kady, denied the rumors circulating on social media regarding the internet service outage being caused by a solar storm. He stated to "Al Arabiya," "The claims about the internet being down due to a solar storm are unfounded, as solar-related electromagnetic storms do not affect internet service or wireless communication. If there is any effect, it would be minimal and in distant areas, and this effect has not been proven."

He also added that "the sun, as the main energy source, experiences various phenomena due to its gaseous composition and its temperature exceeding 6,000 degrees Celsius, in addition to internal explosions. This solar activity generates electromagnetic currents." It is noteworthy that the Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC) recently revealed a solar storm directed at Earth, which is one of the strongest solar energy explosions in the past six years. They also announced that some terrestrial technologies experienced parts of the storm, with weakened radio frequencies used by marine radio devices, some "Starlink" internet satellites, and television broadcasting during the past Wednesday and Thursday.
