Foods That Cause Addiction Like Cigarettes

Scientists warn against consuming potato chips, ice cream, cookies, pizza, and donuts, stating that highly processed foods are as addictive as cigarettes. According to a study reported by the British newspaper "Daily Mail," highly processed foods, such as fast food, are addictive. Among these products are potato chips, certain baked goods, pizza, donuts, and French fries, along with other processed foods.

Researchers reached this conclusion guided by "addiction criteria," which also apply to smoking. Regular consumption of unhealthy processed foods can lead to overeating, as these foods—like nicotine—have negative effects on mood and health. Additionally, these products meet the same addiction criteria as nicotine.

These foods have been linked to obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and numerous other health issues. They are also connected to a rise in diseases such as colorectal cancer, kidney cancer, Alzheimer's, and others. The constant spike in blood sugar from consuming processed foods high in sugars can lead to diabetes.

Scientists indicate that reclassifying highly processed foods as addictive and harmful can affect the brain, having properties or ingredients that cause addiction or enhance cravings. Dr. Ashley Gerhardt, a psychology professor at the University of Michigan and supervisor of the research team, stated that these foods are very similar to cigarettes and other addictive substances due to their taste and structure, which are far removed from natural foods.

She warned that even individuals with a healthy weight remain at risk for cancer and other issues from consuming such fast food. The researchers want to restrict the marketing of these foods to children, in the same way that cigarette advertisements are prohibited from targeting children.
