U.S. National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan made it clear that the Biden administration does not consider the deaths of Palestinians in Gaza by Israel in its war with Hamas as "genocide." Sullivan stated to reporters at the White House that the United States wants to see Hamas defeated, adding that Palestinians caught in the midst of the war are facing hell. He further stated that any major military operation by Israel in Rafah would be a mistake. Sullivan continued, "The United States is still working urgently to reach a ceasefire and a deal for hostage exchanges." U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken had warned on Sunday that a wide Israeli attack on Rafah would create "chaos" without eliminating Hamas, acknowledging that the number of civilians who have died in the war exceeds that of those killed within the Palestinian movement.
