Today, Prime Minister Najib Mikati met with Minister of Environment Nasser Yassin, Secretary General of the Supreme Defense Council, General Muhammad Mustafa, and Secretary General of the Higher Relief Commission, General Muhammad Khair, at the Grand Serail, where they reviewed the preliminary assessment of the damage from the recent storm.
During the meeting, Prime Minister Mikati requested that the "Disaster and Crisis Management Committee" convene to monitor the recent floods and make appropriate decisions regarding the referral of all violations affecting river courses to the competent judiciary. He also emphasized the need to ensure the continued opening of main roads and to follow up on procedures related to citizen safety post-storm.
Following this, the committee met this morning and issued the following recommendations to be presented to the Prime Minister for appropriate decisions:
- Assigning the military and the Higher Relief Commission to assess and evaluate the damage in collaboration with municipalities and relevant departments.
- Raising damage while repairing and rehabilitating the infrastructure affected by the storm and floods, particularly addressing collapses and removing debris on road networks to ensure public safety and transportation access.
- Strictly enforcing violations on river properties and requesting the judiciary to pursue violators, along with the Ministry of Interior and Municipalities to remove such violations, while ensuring that departments and municipalities comply with the Water Law and Environmental Protection Law.
- Improving the capabilities of response teams at the General Directorate of Civil Defense and fire brigades, and allocating the necessary funding for this purpose.
- Collaborating with the National Council for Scientific Research to activate a flood early warning system and issuing alerts through the council's platform and media.
