The Biden administration announced new strict tariff rates today on Chinese imports worth $18 billion. The White House stated that the increase in tariffs is necessary to protect American industries from unfair competition. Starting this year, President Joe Biden will increase tariffs on imported Chinese electric vehicles fourfold, from 25% to 100%. Tariffs on Chinese solar cells will also double from 25% to 50%. The tariffs on certain Chinese steel and aluminum imports will more than triple, increasing from 7.5% to 25%. The White House announced today the increase in tariffs on Chinese products by up to $18 billion. Additionally, the president directed U.S. Trade Representative Katherine Tai to increase tariff rates on lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicles and lithium batteries for other uses by more than three times. China responded to these reports, stating: "We are deeply dissatisfied with Washington imposing additional tariffs on our products," adding: "We will respond to Washington's trade actions to defend our interests and rights."
