Scientists at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln suggest that "certain types of foods may help slow down brain aging." According to the journal Nature Aging, researchers have identified a list of nutrients that might contribute to healthy brain aging, prompting further research to prove and confirm these results. The researchers indicate that "these substances include eicosapentaenoic acid and alpha-lipoic acid, which can be found in fish, shellfish, flaxseeds, chia seeds, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, and walnuts."
The researchers note that "three different carotenoids, which are plant pigments that give many fruits and vegetables their distinctive colors, prominently feature in the list of nutrients that delay brain aging. Foods rich in carotenoids include spinach, kale, corn, red, yellow, and green bell peppers, tomatoes, watermelon, grapefruit, yellow watermelon, broccoli, and carrots."
Additionally, the list includes vitamin E and choline. This vitamin is found in high quantities in nuts, seeds, vegetable oils, leafy greens, and whole grains.
