Estimates from media analysis firm "Comscore" show that the film "Barbie," distributed by Warner Bros, continues to generate huge revenues for the second consecutive week, expecting to make $93 million in ticket sales from Friday to Sunday. Comscore reported that "Barbie," directed by Greta Gerwig, is the highest-grossing film directed by a woman during its opening weekend this year, having grossed over $351 million in the United States and Canada since its release on July 21, and nearly $775 million worldwide.
The film "Barbie" follows the famous doll that first appeared over 60 years ago, starring Margot Robbie alongside Ryan Gosling as Barbie's iconic love interest Ken. "Barbie" faces box office competition from Christopher Nolan's film "Oppenheimer," which centers on physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer and the creation of the atomic bomb. The film is estimated to have grossed about $46.2 million over Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, which Comscore analyst Paul Dergarabedian described as an "amazing second weekend."
The two films have been dubbed "Barbenheimer," referring to the relative rarity of two such significant films premiering at the same time. "Oppenheimer," distributed by Universal Pictures, has grossed $174 million in the United States and Canada so far, along with $400 million globally.
