The British ambassador to Mexico was quietly dismissed from his position earlier this year after he aimed an assault rifle at one of the embassy staff members, an incident that surfaced on social media. According to a report by the Financial Times, "British ambassador John Benjamin was on an official trip to Durango and Sinaloa, two states with strong organized crime groups, when he picked up a firearm in the vehicle he was traveling in and pointed it at a colleague, signaling discomfort in a five-second clip."
The firearm was reportedly owned by the security detail accompanying the diplomat. The video was posted by an anonymous account on the platform "X," which stated: "In the context of daily killings in Mexico by drug traffickers, he dares to joke."
Benjamin, who is 61 years old, is no longer listed as ambassador on the UK government's website. The British government stated that they "took action against ambassador John Benjamin," without confirming "whether he was dismissed from his position."
