Biden Appoints New Advisor to Address Immigration Levels

U.S. President Joe Biden has appointed a new advisor to tackle unprecedented levels of migration across the Americas, according to sources for Axios. Marcela Escobari, who has spent most of her career working in Latin America and international development, is now competing for this issue within the National Security Council as increasing migration has become a concern among voters ahead of November. Escobari, who grew up in Bolivia and immigrated to the United States, will take over as the National Security Council's coordinator for the Los Angeles Declaration, a 2022 commitment among countries in the hemisphere to cooperate on migration.

Escobari recently served as the Deputy Assistant Administrator at the U.S. Agency for International Development for Latin America and the Caribbean, a position she also held during the latter part of former President Barack Obama's administration. She managed inter-agency meetings and worked with senior officials on immigration and the Los Angeles Declaration. She will replace Katie Tobin, who was a key player in the Biden administration's border efforts since the beginning of the administration before leaving earlier this year. Escobari will represent the administration in Guatemala next Tuesday at the third ministerial meeting regarding the Los Angeles Declaration.
