"The Quintet" Resumes Meetings on Wednesday... Two Options Ahead

The members of the Quintet will resume their meetings tomorrow at the U.S. embassy compound in Aoukar, east of Beirut, with the full attendance of the ambassadors from Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Egypt, and France, who will be hosted by U.S. Ambassador Lisa Johnson. It appears that the deadline set by Johnson previously, as conveyed by several lawmakers, to complete the presidential election before the end of May is likely to expire without achieving the desired goal, although Johnson and her fellow ambassadors are striving to make progress in the file that has been pending since 2022. In this context, an informed source told the Kuwaiti Al-Anbaa that the Quintet will conduct a comprehensive review of its actions, and it faces two options: either to set a ceiling for this movement to exert pressure on the various parties to make concessions and create convergence in positions to successfully carry out the presidential election, or to continue its mission with the current dynamics to keep the situation under control while awaiting the right opportunity to elect a president.
