Desert Low Pressure System Drives Libyan Government to Declare Official Holiday

The government appointed by the Libyan House of Representatives announced an official holiday for all public sectors on the upcoming Monday and Tuesday, in light of predictions of a desert low-pressure system. The government's announcement is based on Decision No. 48 of 2024 issued by its head, Osama Hamad, which declared the next Monday and Tuesday as emergency holidays for all ministries and public agencies due to bad weather conditions, according to "Al-Wasat" portal.

The decision exempts employees in health facilities, security agencies, and anyone whose work requires them to address the impacts of bad weather, while ensuring those employees' rights to compensation for their work during these days according to the law.

The decision also tasked the Minister of Interior with issuing instructions and directives to all security checkpoints to limit movement on coastal and secondary roads in areas where visibility is expected to be severely reduced due to adverse weather conditions. The National Meteorological Center expects that most regions of Libya will be affected starting Sunday evening with weather fluctuations due to a desert low-pressure system accompanied by southeastern winds in the eastern and southern regions, which are expected to become active to strong on Monday.
