After a full 75 years, the scenes of displacement from Gaza recall for Palestinians and Arabs the memories of the Nakba of 1948, but in an updated 2023 version. The painful images show entire families on carts pulled by animals or families walking on foot, carrying what they can of their life belongings, leaving their homes and possessions behind. Thousands are walking across Gaza from north to south, fleeing Israeli bombardment that has destroyed their homes and rendered them homeless.
You see an elderly woman over 90 years old, painfully walking alongside her children and grandchildren. This scene is not new to her; she lived it in her childhood during the Nakba of 1948. You see a mother dragging her children with both hands along the way, heading towards an uncertain future and leaving behind everything she owns.
You also see the youngest displaced person—a baby born just hours ago—who began the journey of displacement with her mother and family immediately after her birth, without having the time for her first meal... there is no time to rest from the pains of childbirth to catch her breath.
Since October 7, Israel has been intensively bombing the besieged Gaza Strip, and since October 27, its forces have commenced a ground operation in the north, with violent clashes occurring for days between the Israeli army and Hamas in "the heart of Gaza," according to army statements. Israel has vowed since the first day of the war to "crush" Hamas.
