A video of an animal in the mountains of Mecca has gone viral on social media platforms in Saudi Arabia. Users described the creature seen on Jebel Khundama as "strange" due to its large size and distinctive features. In response, the National Center for Wildlife Development in Saudi Arabia clarified that the animal shown in the video is a "rock hyrax." They indicated via their account on the platform "X" that this animal is a wild mammal that lives in mountainous environments.
It is noteworthy that the rock hyrax resembles a rabbit, has no tail, short ears, and its body is covered in dark brown fur. It feeds on plants, grains, and fruits, tolerating food scarcity during dry periods. The rock hyrax is native to high, smooth rocky areas, which provides it protection from predators.
