The Economic Times reported that India is likely to sign an agreement with Iran today, Monday, to manage Chabahar Port in southeastern Iran for the next ten years. The newspaper, citing unspecified sources, stated that Indian Minister of Ports and Shipping Sarbananda Sonowal is likely to travel to Iran to sign the agreement. The Indian government has not yet responded to a request for comment. India is developing part of Chabahar Port, overlooking the Gulf of Oman, as a means to transport goods to Iran, Afghanistan, and Central Asian countries, avoiding the port of Karachi in Pakistan. However, U.S. sanctions on Iran have slowed down the development of the port.
