The Nigerian army announced the rescue of one of the missing Chibok students who were abducted by the Boko Haram Islamic group a decade ago. The army reported that "the student named Lydia Simon, along with her three children, was rescued by forces conducting an operation in northeastern Borno state," adding that she was five months pregnant at the time of her rescue. The army did not specify how and when the rescue operation took place, stating only that it was "recent."
Among the 276 students abducted by Boko Haram in 2014, more than 100 students have eventually regained their freedom, while the fate of over 80 girls remains unknown, according to figures from Amnesty International. It is noted that the Boko Haram group, which aims to impose Islamic law, has waged a 15-year insurgency in northern Nigeria and has abducted thousands of people.
