The Beirut Municipality Council held an electoral session today, Friday, chaired by Vice President Engineer Eli Andria, in the presence of Beirut Governor Judge Marwan Aboud. During the session, municipal council member Abdullah Darwish was elected as President of the Beirut Municipality, succeeding the former president, Engineer Jamal Itani.
In a statement after the elections, the new president Abdullah Darwish thanked the members of the municipal council for their "valued" trust, affirming his "determination to work with all his might to meet their expectations and those of the residents of Beirut." Darwish noted that "the harsh conditions Lebanon is experiencing due to the financial and economic collapse have had very negative repercussions on the municipality and its capabilities, as well as its ability to respond to the diverse demands of the city at various levels. Therefore, we will work to identify priorities and address them with all available resources, in collaboration with the Vice President, council members, and the honorable Governor Judge Marwan Aboud."
He stated, "The suffering and problems are significant and affect all streets and neighborhoods of the capital. We will certainly be present everywhere and with all the city's residents, in fulfillment of our duties and based on the tasks assigned to the municipality in its efforts for the benefit of Beirut and its people. Furthermore, we are committed to a national duty consistent with consolidating coexistence, national partnership, and our social values."
