South Africa Asks the International Court of Justice for Additional Measures Against Israel

South Africa has requested the International Court of Justice to order additional emergency measures against Israel due to its attacks on Rafah in the Gaza Strip, according to the United Nations-affiliated court on Friday. In the ongoing case filed by South Africa, which accuses Israel of committing acts of genocide against the Palestinians, the court in January ordered Israel to refrain from any actions that could fall under the Genocide Convention and to ensure that its forces do not commit genocide against the Palestinians.

South Africa's Complaint

South Africa filed a complaint with the International Court of Justice at the end of December, accusing Israel of genocide in Gaza, a charge that Israel has strongly denied. The court ordered Israel in January to do everything in its power to prevent genocide during its attack on Gaza and ruled that Israel must allow aid to enter Gaza.

Weeks later, South Africa requested further measures, citing reports of an announced incursion in Rafah, a request that the court rejected. Pretoria warned that its request may be "the last opportunity available for this court to save the Palestinian people in Gaza who are dying of hunger, and are now 'one step away from famine'."
