IAEA Board Issues Decision Against Iran

Iran's official television reported today, Wednesday, that Iran's mission to the United Nations stated that the issuance of a decision against Iran by the Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) was "hasty and unwise." Diplomats who attended a closed meeting of the IAEA Board of Governors, which consists of 35 countries, mentioned that "the board approved a decision today, Wednesday, calling on Iran to enhance its cooperation with the agency and to revoke the recent restrictions on the entry of senior inspectors." They added that "the board approved the proposal with the support of 20 countries, opposition from 2, and abstention from 12 countries." The decision was proposed by the United Kingdom, France, and Germany, while the United States initially opposed it for fear that Iran would escalate its nuclear activities in response, as it had done with previous decisions.
