Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson expressed his openness today, Monday, to deploying nuclear weapons in the country "in times of war," amid demands from critics to ban them on the territory of the state, which recently joined NATO. Kristersson said, "In times of war, the situation is completely different. This depends on what happens." He added, "In the worst-case scenarios for democratic countries in our region, the ability to defend themselves against countries that may threaten us with nuclear weapons is crucial." He emphasized that such a decision rests with Sweden, not the United States, stating, "Sweden makes decisions regarding its territory." Kristersson clarified that "The goal of our NATO membership and our defense is to ensure that this situation does not recur. If Ukraine had been a NATO member, it would not have been attacked by Russia." The Swedish parliament will vote in June on a bilateral defense cooperation agreement with the United States, which will allow Americans access to Swedish military bases and the storage of equipment and weapons there.
