The wife of a U.S. Marine has been crowned the first transgender beauty queen in the state of Maryland. Becca Ann Kennedy, 31, won the title on Saturday and expressed her readiness to compete in the Miss USA pageant, which will be held in Los Angeles on August 4. Kennedy noted that the victory was a "whirlwind because I knew it was bigger than me," adding, "I knew this would mean a lot to all the LGBTQ kids who may feel they don't belong in society." She emphasized that she felt no anxiety about being the only transgender competitor, saying she felt support from the "sisterhood" of women on stage.
