Organizers of the Cannes Film Festival announced that American actress Meryl Streep will receive the honorary Palme d'Or at the festival's opening ceremony, which will take place on May 14th. Streep, who is 74 years old, is one of the most renowned actresses in Hollywood history, with three Academy Awards from 21 nominations. Her career is filled with many successful works, including "The Deer Hunter," "Out of Africa," and "Kramer vs. Kramer," as well as beloved family films like "The Devil Wears Prada" and "Mamma Mia!" Ironically, she has only participated in Cannes once, winning the Best Actress award for "A Cry in the Dark" in 1989. Streep stated in a statement, "I am incredibly honored to learn of this prestigious award. Winning an award at the Cannes Film Festival, for the international community of artists, always represents the highest achievement in the art of filmmaking." She added, "Standing in the shadow of those who have been honored before is equally humbling and exhilarating." Streep will join a group of Hollywood stars attending the festival this year in the French Riviera, including director George Lucas, known for creating the "Star Wars" series, who will also receive an award at the closing ceremony in recognition of his overall career. The festival organizers stated, "Because her career has spanned nearly 50 years in cinema and embodies countless masterpieces, Meryl Streep is part of our collective imagination and our shared love of cinema." The renowned Japanese animation studio "Ghibli" will also receive the honorary Palme d'Or, marking the first time this award is presented to a group rather than an individual.
