Title: "New York Times Sues OpenAI and Microsoft for Copyright Infringement"

Title:

The "New York Times" has filed a lawsuit against "OpenAI" and "Microsoft," accusing them on Wednesday of using millions of the newspaper's articles without permission to assist in training artificial intelligence technologies. The newspaper stated that it is the first major American media organization to sue the two companies that created "ChatGPT" and other AI platforms concerning copyright issues.

It added that the companies were attempting to "freely benefit from the Times' massive investment in journalism by using it to establish alternative products without permission or financial compensation," according to the complaint filed in a federal court in Manhattan. The two companies have not yet responded to requests for comments.

The Times is not seeking a specific amount in damages but noted that OpenAI and Microsoft have caused billions of dollars in harm. It also wants the companies to destroy chat model programs and training datasets that include its materials. While OpenAI's parent company is non-profit, Microsoft has invested $13 billion in a for-profit subsidiary for a 49% stake. Investors estimate OpenAI's value at over $80 billion.
