Activists on social media circulated claims made by a traveler at Cairo International Airport regarding the exchange of foreign currencies he possessed into the local currency, "Egyptian pounds," before departing for another country. A surveillance camera at Cairo Airport captured the events, with a video published by the Egyptian Ministry of Interior on its X (formerly Twitter) page illustrating what occurred with the traveler at the baggage screening checkpoint.
The Ministry of Interior commented on the various angles of the video, stating that it begins with the traveler entering the airport, followed by his inspection and "directions to comply with the permitted financial limit," and that he "underwent additional inspection procedures" while "holding the cash in his hand during the inspection," as mentioned in the video's commentary.
In a statement regarding the video, the Egyptian Ministry of Interior said: "The surveillance cameras at Cairo International Airport contradict the claims of (an individual - holding the nationality of a foreign country) who alleged that he exchanged his money - foreign currencies for local currencies - while traveling to one of the countries, confirming that he fabricated the incident to create confusion... Legal actions have been initiated."
