Discovery of a Mass Grave in Babylon: A Young Man Stays by the Pit Hoping to Find His Father

After approximately 33 years, the announcement of a mass grave in Babylon has reignited hope and anticipation in the spirit of a young man who was only one year old when his father went missing during the events of the Shiite uprising in 1991. Two days ago, during excavation work that raised suspicions about the existence of a mass grave and remains in the Bab al-Mashhad area of Babil Province, the Ministry of Interior intervened along with a team from the Prime Minister's office and the Martyrs Foundation.

The Babil Police Command announced the commencement of digging around the Women's and Children's Hospital in the Bab al-Mashhad area and secured the area to continue operations on the potential mass grave linked to the 1991 uprising. This was followed by the official announcement of finding the remains of three victims.

This announcement prompted Louay, who is 34 years old, to sit near the pit being worked on, hoping to discover his father's remains in a place he believes is a mass grave containing the remains of several victims buried in 1991 during the events of the Shiite uprising. Estimates and beliefs suggest that between 30 to 50 remains have been buried in this location for 33 years.
