The UK's national weather service announced that Thursday is the hottest day of the year so far, with preliminary data showing temperatures reaching 32.6 degrees Celsius in the southeast of England. The Met Office reported that the highest temperature recorded this year was 32.2 degrees Celsius, noted twice in June. Met Office head Stephen Ramsdale indicated that temperatures are "well above average for this time of year" due to high pressure in the southeast of the country. He added, "Conditions have indeed been favorable across much of England and Wales for heatwaves, and areas of Scotland and Northern Ireland are also likely to continue experiencing some unseasonably high temperatures." The Met Office mentioned last week that Britain is witnessing its eighth hottest summer since 1884.
